Do I need to get a permit for mountaineering in Nepal?

Yes, you need permit for any mountaineering expeditions in Nepal.

You need to apply for permit from the Tourism Industry Division of Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation. The division uses the same building as the Nepal Tourism Board in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu.

The royalty for the mountaineering expeditions is as follows (as of August 2008):

>>For Mount Everest

(1) The royalty for the mountaineering expedition team not exceeding 7 in number from the alternate route (other than the general Southeast route) shall be fifty thousand U.S. dollar ($50,000).

(2) The royalty for the mountaineering expedition from general route (Southeast route) for the mountaineering expedition team shall be as follows:

(1) The royalty for the other mountains in Nepal are as follows:

Note: S – Royalty for summer season;  W – Royalty for winter season

(2) Not more than five members may be added in the mountaineering expedition team besides what is mentioned in clause (1).

On January 2008, the government reviewed the royalty on the seasonal basis. The government reduced mountaineering royalty by 50 % for the expedition during winter season and 75 % during the summer. The royalty for Mt. Ama Dablam will be the same for any season.

Permits are obtained from the Tourism Industry Division of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation at Bhrikutimandap.
