When is Maghe Sankranti celebrated?

It is celebrated on the first day of the month of Magh (mid January) to mark the end of the coldest winter days. This festival marks the northward movement of the winter sun. On this day people bathe at holy river confluences, especially at Devghat (confluence of Kali Gandaki and Trisuli in Chitwan), Ridi (confluence of Kali Gandaki and Ridi Khola in Palpa), Barah Chhetra (confluence of Sunkoshi and Tamor in Sunsari) and Sankhu (Shali river in Kathmandu).

Tharus, an ethnic group residing mainly in the southern plains, also celebrate this day as Maghi Festival – the first day of their annual calendar. A public holiday is given on this day.
