There are government owned and private elephants in the park. Government owned elephants leave the visitor center at 8 am and 4 pm daily. The one and half hour long elephant safari costs Rs 1000 ($15) for foreigners and Rs 400 ($ 6) for the members of SAARC countries. Some private elephant safaris cost Rs 550 ($ 8) plus the park fees and last for two and half hours.

Elephant ride is probably the best way to observe wildlife in Chitwan National Park. You can get a superb view from the top of the elephant and they are not as noisy as jeeps. Although elephant ride may not be very comfortable, it is a thrilling and exciting experience
