The Great Himalaya Trail – alpine trek for trekking enthusiasts

Trekkers to Nepal bored with trekking around the beaten treks, the road construction on the popular treks, and looking for a challenge can find a new trekking ‘holy grail’ in the himalayan region of Nepal. A pictorial guide about the highest and the most challenging alpine trek, written by Robin Boustead, has been launched in Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal on October 16, 2009.
Robin did the 1600 kilometer trail in 162 days – post monsoon season of 2008, after September, and pre monsoon season of 2009, before June. The trail started from the Kanchenjunga Base Camp from far east to Api Himal in the Far Western Nepal. The trail covered all the 8 mountains above 8000 meters.
The pictorial guide contains 12 detailed colour maps of every trekking region in Nepal, pictures of every mountains above 8000 meters in Nepal, 145 colour pictures, the first ever inter-linked series of trekking maps for every mountain region, information about the main ethnic groups along the trail.
The pictorial guide was published by Himalayan Map House, Basantapur, Kathmandu. A travel guide about the trail will be published in early March 2010 by Trailblazer, UK.
Speaking at the book launch ceremony, Robin Boustead highlighted the situation along the Great Himalaya Trail and hoped that it would be the next big thing for the trekking in Nepal and the local community along the trail will benefit from the commercialization of this trail.
Since the trail is long and takes a significant amount of time and can not be done continuously due to weather conditions – monsoon and winter, trekking enthusiasts could do parts of the trek separately and complete the trail in several years.
