International Elephant Polo Competition 2009 is the event that is sure to excite the sport enthusiasts who travel to Nepal. The 28th edition of the event has shifted from its regular venue in Meghauli, Chitwan National Park to Thakurdwara, Bardia National Park. The event has started from November 29 and will finish at December 5, 2009.

Altogether 12 local and international teams have participated in the event. The participants include teams from the USA, Britain, Hongkong, Scotland, Singapore, Tiger Tops Karnali and Karnali National Park. Ten Elephants for the event are provided by the National Park while six others were managed by the competing teams.

Elephant polo is a variant of polo played while riding on elephants. Equipments used in this sport consist of a standard polo ball and six to nine foot cane sticks with a polo mallet head on the end. The pitch is three-quarters of the length of a standard polo pitch. The way of playing the game is that Mahout rides the elephant while the player hits the ball and tells the mahout which way to go.

To travel to Bardiya National Park, you could fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and drive another two hours to the park. Bardiya is also accessible by road from Kathmandu or Pokhara, a 12-14 hour drive from Kathmandu and 8-9 hours from Pokhara.
